This poem by Edward Lear goes by several other titles too:

~ The Owl and the Pussy-cat
Verse I
The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea-green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
‘O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!’

Owl sang to a small guitar
Verse II
Pussy said to the Owl, ‘You elegant fowl!
How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?’
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-tree grows
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose,
His nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

A piggy-wig with a ring at the end of his nose
Verse III
‘Dear pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?’ Said the Piggy, ‘I will.’
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.

They danced by the light of the moon
Listen to the entire poem:
Hello,
This poem was new to me but my mum remembers it from her childhood.
It’s a fun nonsense poem especially for cat lovers.
We listended to the audio and thought the voice was well suited for reading the poem. Do you often read poetry aloud? Do you plan to read any more poems online?
The illustrations were good as well.
Best wishes,
Cameron
Hi Cameron
It is a “nonsense poem” as are many of my favourite poems, especially those by Lewis Carroll, who wrote Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass. Edward Lear, the author of this little gem, wrote a number of other lesser-known nonsense poems which I hope to help publicise.
This is only the second poem I’ve read out loud on my website (the other is the fantastic and informative The Chaos) but yes, I hope to make many more recordings.
Thank you for your kind comments.

Tayo
What an exciting poem, the owl and the pussy cat. I actually enjoyed it more when I listened to the full story via the audio player on this page. The poem started in a lovely note and ended same even as the pussy cat and the owl celebrate their coming together in marriage. I am very sure they’ll live happily ever after.
Hi Tush.
I’m glad you found the poem exciting and enjoyed the recital. You are correct; the poem starts and ends on a note which I find romantic and joyful. I too think that the owl and the pussy-cat will live together happily ever after. Fingers crossed!
